Jatropha curcas L Plantation For Autonomy in Natural Energy

Profil of Jatropha curcas L UB-16

UB – 16 Jatropha curcas L seeds stove specification:

  1. Stove size : 27 x 27x 27 cm Weight : 12 kg.
  2. Tank capacity: maximum 300 gr.
  3. Made of 0.6 mm metal sheet.
  4. The surface is painted by silver duco.
  5. The components are: Inside and outside chesnut, Stoom, Ash container, Air regulator, The lid too put the fire out, The stove body
  6. The stove endurance is about 2 years and is being evaluated.
  7. The flame capability: 200gr of peeled seeds (kernel ) are able to flare up for 60 minutes. (with 5% seeds water degree)
  8. The length of the flame depends on the seeds oil degree (the highest is the longest)
  9. The flame is 80% blue.
  10. The energy production is still evaluated. (based on the demonstration, the stove produces higher energy than petroleum stove)
    e.g. it needs 8 minutes to boil 1500 ml of water.

Usage Instruction

  1. Set all the stove components.
  2. Peel the sun dried Jatropha Curcas L seeds = 5%
  3. Put maximum 3000 gr of the peeled seeds (kernel) into a stove through the upper part of the stove. (No more than 3000 gr, otherwise it disturbs the air regulation)
  4. a. Flare up the stove by ixing a few crushed Jatropha Curcas L seeds with petroleum, then put it on the Jatropha Curcas L seeds that have been prepared in the stove. Finally, flare up afire.
    b. If there is no petroleum, crushed the seeds so they produce oil, and pour a little methylated spirit and put it on the Jatropha Curcas L seeds that have been prepared in the stove. Then flare up afire. The research has known that using methylated spirit is better than petroleum.
  5. To have good flame, wait for about 5 minutes until the stove has been flared up thoroughly and the fire is blue.
  6. Put the Jatropha Curcas L seeds as much as it is needed (it must be appropriate for the seeds ability to flare up)
    e.g. It needs 8 minutes to boil 1500 ml of water.
  7. If the flame is getting turn down, add more seeds as much as it is needed.
  8. To turn down the flame, move down the air regulator.
  9. For the next usage, clean up the stove from ash of the seeds by scraping the ash until it falls down to the cross section with the opened regalator at the right side.
  10. Put the lid on the stove to turn the fire off.

Note :.
According to the research, the stove can flare up for 60 minutes with 200 gr of seeds. The flare also depends on the level of seed dryness/ aridity and seeds oil degree.

  Jatropha Curcas L Seed Stove UB - 16 Properness for Household

Jatropha Curcas L plant is an alternative energy that can be used for a household. The result of the simple research shows that the stove with Jatropha Curcas L seed oil has high properness to be used as the cook aids for household.

By the properness evaluation, 260 gr of peeled Jatropha Curcas L seeds (kernel) produces the heat (flame) for an hour. It needs 8 minutes to boil 1.5 liter (1.47 kg) of water (1000C). It means that to boil 1.5 liter water needs (200 gram / 60 m) x 8 minutes = 26.67 gram per 1.47 kg of water or 18.14 gram of kernel for one kilogram of water.

This research can be evaluated by applying physics rules about heat.
e.g. Q = mc.T
Q (joule) is the heat quality equivalent with the temperature increasing T (0K) of a thing and it’s mass m(kg) and specific heat capacity C (J.kg-1.0K).

By using this equation, the mass of seeds (kg) that is needed can be counted if the specific heat capacity of the seeds is known.

For the description, the specific heat capacity of water is 4190 J.kg-1.0K. So the energy needed to increase the temperature of one kilogram of water from 250C to 1000C is
Q = [(1 kg) x (4190 J.kg-1.0K) x (100 -25)0K] J.
Q= 341250 J = 0.314250 MJ.

The energy content of Jatropha Curcas L seeds and it’s skin is about 20 MJ.kg-1, and the kernel 30 MJ.kg-1 (table 1). Based on these data, the weight of Jatropha Curcas L seeds (W) needed to produce heat 0.314250 MJ(Q) or to increase the temperature of 1 kg of water from 250C to 1000C is
W= [ Q water / C Jatropha Curcas L seeds]
W= [0.314250 MJ / 30 MJ.kg-1]
W= 0.010475 kg = 10.475 gram kernel or equivalent with 15.7 gram of Jatropha Curcas L seeds and its skin if all the energy of kernel is used perfectly.

In the application, the heat from ignition is not thoroughly used to heat water, but some of it is used to heat the place of water and its environment. The comparison of the seeds quantity needed theoretically (10.475 q) to the seeds quantity used (18.141 gram) reflects the efeciency of the Jatropha Curcas L seeds heat energy usage, is 10.475 / 18.141 = 0.58 = 58%. It means that it is only 58 % of Jatropha Curcas L seeds energy is effectively used to increase the temperature.

When the need of energy for cooking in a household that has three family members is roughly made the same with the needs of energy to boil 10 – 15 kg of water. It means (10-15) x 0.314250=3.14250 – 4.7138 MJ = 1147.01 – 1726.52 MJ for a year (1 year = 365 days). This energy can be supplied by 98.88, 148.32 kg of Jatropha Curcas L seeds per year.

If the farm operation of Jatropha Curcas L plants is able to produce 4000 kg per area per year with plants population 2000 trees of Jatropha Curcas L seeds, so the energy produced is 4000 kg x 20MJ per kg x 0.58 = 46400 MJ per year. It is enough to cover the needs of 27 – 40 family for a year. This is equal to the needs of Jatropha Curcas L plants to cover the family who uses Jatropha Curcas L seeds stove for daily cooking, that is 99-148 kg for each family per year or 0.27 – 0.41 kg of seeds per day.
If it is assumed that a tree of Jatropha Curcas L plant produces 2 kg of seeds per year, so every family must plant 50-75 Jatropha Curcas L trees.
