JATROPHA CURCAS PLANTATION Time and Place Jatropha nursery will take about more than 2 years (2006-2008). The nursery will then be functioned as a plantation if the seed demand decrease by implementing sparse plant. Jatropha nursery will be implemented in an area of 10 hectares. Stalk or seed need for 10 hectares is 25.000-30-000 stalks or 15 kilograms of seed (grow power > 80%). Land Preparation and Planting Land plowing, getting rid of weeds and soil flatting, making drainage by using hand tractor and a hoe.

Planting time is one to one and a half month before dry season ends, by planting prepared stalks or seeds (it better to soak seeds in water for a day-24 hours).

For planting with seed, it is better to plant the seeds by making holes in the soil and put in 1-2 seeds in each hole. If using stalks, recomended stalk size is 25-40 cm, diameter of 2 cm, hard stalk, green-whitish in color.

In a monoculture planting system, recomended space is 2 x 2 meters, population per hectare 2500 plants. If using seeds, the process is continued with sparsing plants when the stalks aged 2 weeks after planting. If using stalks, we can plant the old-aged stem into a 10cm hole.

Clean the weeds and grass grow int the plantation area to prevent them from competing with Jatropha in water and soil mineral. The cleaning can be done about 2 weeks after planting or depend ont the situation in the field.

Fertilizer can be given twice, at the planting time as basic fertilizer and continued fertilizer when plants are aged 3-4 weeks. Recomended dose is based on balanced-mineral system (NPK) Urea : SP-36 : KCl = 4 : 2 : 1. At the time of planting, each Jatropha tree needs 50 gram mixture of Urea, SP-36, and KCl = 2 : 2 : 1 and 20 gr of Urea after 3 – 4 weeks. Fertilizer is given by making hole in the soil 5-7 cm deep with the distance of 5-10 cm from the stalk then close again the hole. Cutting are done when the plants are 90cm high, to produce to a lot stem. Harvesting is done after the plant reach the age of 6 months after planted. Ready to harvest characteristic : the fruit color is yellow. Harvested fruits then peeled and the seed are dried in an open place with a good sanitation. Good seeds to be processed into oil shall be maintained to be contain 12% of ware.
