DESCRIPTION OF Jatropha Curcas L

  • Hig-bush plant 2-5 meters tall
  • Grow up well in unfertile soil, hot climate, from low land to 300 meters above sea level.
  • Transparent sap, smooth crust, single leave.
  • Seeds are produced in 6-9 month.
  • Can still grow up in critical land if planted in tumpang sari metode.
  • Seedling or seeds.
  • Tolerance to heavy rainy reason.
  • Chemical composition: n-l-triakontanol, alpha-amirin, kampesterol, stigmast-5-ene-3 beta, 7 alpha-diol, stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol, iso-viteksin, viteksin, 7-keto-betasitosterol, HCN.
  • Seed need : 2-3 kg/hectare, 2500 plants / hectare.
  • Can be planted in an area below 800 meters above sea level, temperature = 20-30 Celcius.
  • Every hectare plantation can be planted by 1300-2500 Jatropha trees, 3000-5000 for seedling.
  • Seed need = 1 ½ - 3 kg/hectare (monoculture).
  • Each hectare plantation can produce 1½ - 5 tons seeds. 2000 trees population in first year and 5-10 tons for second year with 25-35% Jatropha oil concentration.
  • Planting periode is only 5-7 months and can be harvested until 50 years.
  • Rain fall 300-1200 mm/year.
  • Planting media in polybag by mixing soil and sand (3:1) and 2 months nursery period.
  • Plant disease might attack after 3 years.
  • Jatropha oil can be produced by local villagers using simple equipment. The oil can function as a substitute to convetional fuel.
  • High demand for export market (Japan, Korea, Singapore)
  • Providing jobs for the unemployed inhabitants around the plantation and help increasing local economic growth which will reduced poverty and unemployment level.
